Travis Holmes celebrated after he led VMI with 30 points in its stunning victory over Kentucky at Rupp Arena. It's the second year Kentucky lost to a mid-major it was supposed to crush. The Wildcats fell to Gardner Webb last year.

UConn 81, Western Carolina 55

Hasheem Thabeet and Jerome Dyson led the Huskies with 23 points a piece as UConn coasted by Western Carolina. Dyson (pictured) had five assists while Thabeet pulled down 17 boards.

Duke 82, Rhode Island 79

Jimmy Baron ( pictured) lit up the Blue Devils, going 8-for-10 from the three-point line. It took last-minute free throws from Kyle Singler, who had 21 points, for Duke to escape.

UNC 86, Penn 71

Tyler who? While Player of the Year Tyler Hansbrough watched from the bench, freshman Tyler Zeller scored a team-high 20 points to lift the No. 1 Tar Heels.

Memphis 90, Fairfield63

Despite an early deficit, the Tigers got a boost from freshman superstar Tyreke Evans in a 27-point win. Evans, who played with an upset stomach and a sprained ankle, scored 19 points for Memphis in the Puerto Rico Tip-Off Tournament.

Indiana 83, Northwestern State 65

New Indiana coach Tom Crean finally got a piece of good news -- a win. The Hoosiers topped Northwestern State in their season opener.

Notre Dame 94, South Carolina-Upstate 58

Luke Harangody had the fourth 30-point game of his career and grabbed 14 rebounds to lead the Fighting Irish past South Carolina-Upstate.

Kansas 71, UMKC 56

Looking quite different from the team that cut down the nets last season, Kansas topped UMKC 71-56. Sherron Collins led the Jayhawks with 16 points, and fans got a chance to get a first look at the team's freshmen, including Quintrell Thomas (pictured).

Wisconsin 68, Long Beach State 61

Marcus Landry took over, scoring 23 points as the No. 25 Badgers hung on for a victory over Long Beach State.

Baylor 81, Stanford 65

Rachel Allison scored 20 first-half points as No. 19 Baylor got some revenge on a No. 2 Stanford team that embarrassed the Bears last season. Baylor trailed for only a few seconds during the game, swiping the season-opener from Stanford, 81-65.
