PHOENIX (AP) Lon Babby is leaving his position as president for basketball operations for the Phoenix Suns to become a senior adviser for the organization.

The Suns said in a news release that Ryan McDonough would head the basketball operations department from his current position of general manager.

The team said Babby, a former sports agent, will continue to play an active role in contract negotiations and salary cap management.

Babby thanked owner Robert Sarver for accommodating his wish to reduce his work load.

Babby joined the Suns in August 2010 after a 35-year career as an attorney in Washington, D.C. He will assume his new duties on Aug. 1.

The Suns have failed to make the playoffs the last five seasons.
