The Philadelphia 76ers have named Jerry Colangelo their new chairman of basketball operations and special advisor, managing owner Josh Harris announced Monday.

“Jerry Colangelo is one of the most respected people in basketball and we are excited to add his five decades of knowledge, relationships and experiences to help drive our organization forward,” Harris said in a statement.

At a press conference on Monday, Harris expressed his confidence in general manager Sam Hinkie.

Colangelo worked with the Phoenix Suns from 1968–2012, serving as the team’s CEO and chairman, managing general partner, president, head coach and general manager.

He also serves as the chairman of the board of directors for USA Basketball, which has gone 75–1 since his arrival, with two straight Olympic gold medals.

“Through [my] experiences, I think I can offer a lot of mentoring to Sam [Hinkie],” Colangelo said.

The Sixers have started the 2015–16 season with one win in their first 21 games.
