The photographer that captured the original photograph of Michael Jordan crying at his 2009 Basketball Hall of Fame induction ceremony was unaware his work was trending on the Internet until he was contacted for a story by Sara Germano and Stu Woo of The Wall Street Journal.
Stephan Savoia of the Associated Press was credited with taking the picture in Springfield, Mass. on Sept. 11, 2009. He is a member of two Pulitzer-prize winning photography teams for his work on Bill Clinton's presidential campaign in 1992 and later his affair with Monica Lewinsky.
The crying Michael Jordan meme is primarily used by fans on social media to mock teams in moments of sadness, despair and hopelessness. A spokeswoman for Jordan tells the WSJ that he will not take any legal action against people using his image with the meme.
