USA Basketball chairman Jerry Colangelo is being cautious about head coach Mike Krzyzewski’s health and considering other options to potentially coach the team at the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, according to Scott Howard-Cooper of NBA.com.

“Certainly in the back of my mind I’m thinking about what ifs,” Colangelo said.

Krzyzewski missed a game against Georgia Tech earlier in the month and spent time in the hospital.

Gregg Popovich has already been announced as Krzyzewski’s successor as head coach. Colangelo did not say whether he would ask the Spurs head coach to start early in case Krzyzewski is unable to coach in Rio.

Syracuse’s Jim Boeheim, former Bulls coach Tom Thibodeau and Thunder assistant coach Monty Williams are also assistants on Team USA.

The Duke head coach will move into a special advisory role for the 2017–20 window.
