David Blatt accepts Cavaliers championship ring
Former Cavs coach David Blatt has accepted the team’s offer of a championship ring for the work he put in ahead of the team’s title run, according to European basketball reporter David Pick.
“[Cleveland] offered and I graciously accepted because they presented it to me in a way that was very respectful,” Blatt said. “The Cavaliers wanted to give me a ring because the organization felt that I contributed to the championship. It’s not my championship, I recognize that, but I also feel that I did something there, and I graciously accepted because it was a gracious offer on their part. The big thing for me was that I felt that they felt that it was earned, not given, therefore I was happy to accept.”
The Akron Beacon-Journalreported in September that the Cavs planned to give Blatt a ring.
Blatt was fired midway through last season and replaced by assistant Tyronn Lue, who helped lead the team to its first ever title and the first for a Cleveland major sports franchise in 52 years.
Blatt went 83–40 with the Cavaliers and helped the team to the 2015 Finals, where they lost to the Warriors in six games. He is now the head coach of Turkish club DarussafakaDogus.
The Cavs are set to receive their rings ahead of their opener against the Knicks Oct. 25, when the team will raise its championship banner at Quicken Loans Arena.
