Celtics forward Gordon Hayward will miss six weeks after undergoing surgery on his fractured left hand in New York on Monday, the team announced Monday.

The 29-year-old forward injured his hand during Saturday's game against the Spurs. Late in the second quarter, Hayward collided with San Antonio forward LaMarcus Aldridge while trying to defend a Dejounte Murray drive. He left the game for X-rays and did not return.

The injury is potentially a big blow to both the team and Hayward personally. The Butler product was starting to show signs that he had fully recovered from the leg injury that kept him out all but six minutes of the 2017–18 season.

Hayward is averaging 18.9 points, 7.1 rebounds and 4.1 assists per game in eight games.

Boston improved to 7–1 with a win over the Spurs and has the best record in the Eastern Conference.
