Ja Morant Issues Statement After Suspension for Gun Video

Two days after he was suspended for holding a gun in an Instagram Live video over the weekend, Grizzlies point guard Ja Morant issued a statement Tuesday night taking responsibility for his actions and acknowledging how many people he’s let down with his actions.

“I know I’ve disappointed a lot of people who have supported me. This is a journey and I recognize there is more work to do,” Morant’s statement read, per ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski. “My words may not mean much right now, but I take full accountability for my actions. I’m committed to continuing to work on myself.”

Morant was suspended from all team activities while the league investigates the situation. He served an eight-game suspension earlier in the season when he flashed a gun in a Colorado night club in March. He eventually returned from suspension and played during the team’s first round series against the Lakers.

Ahead of Tuesday night’s NBA draft lottery broadcast, league commissioner Adam Silver expressed his surprise at this latest incident involving Morant, and said the NBA is looking into the exact circumstances regarding the video but is “assuming the worst.”

“Honestly, I was shocked when I saw this weekend,” Silver told Andrews. “We’re in the process of investigating it. We’ll figure out exactly what happened to the best we can. … But I’m assuming the worst. We’ll figure out what happened here.”
