Doc Rivers on Coaching Future: ‘I Don’t Know What I’m Gonna Do’
Since leading the Celtics to their first title in over 30 years in 2008, coach Doc Rivers has had an up-and-down 15 years.
His regular season success with Boston, the Clippers and the 76ers has been undeniable—he’s received at least one vote for Coach of the Year in 12 different seasons since ’08—but Rivers hasn’t been able to get teams over the final hump. Los Angeles’s famed Lob City core fizzled without so much as a Western Conference finals appearance, and Philadelphia crashed out of the Eastern Conference semifinals this season in seven games.
Despite the sour end to his 76ers tenure in which he was fired after a blowout Game 7 loss to the Celtics, Rivers seems to be content without a gig for the 2024 season.
“I don’t know what I'm gonna do,” Rivers told TMZ in a brief interview published Friday morning. “I’m just gonna enjoy life.”
He repeated he planned to “just enjoy life” as he graciously deflected questions in Los Angeles, calling his summer “phenomenal” so far.
Rivers, named one of the NBA’s 15 Greatest Coaches during the league’s 75th anniversary season in Feb. 2022, hasn’t taken a full season off since 1999.
