Minnesota Timberwolves star Karl-Anthony Towns has been diagnosed with a torn meniscus in his left knee and is out indefinitely, according to The Athletic’s Shams Charania. 

It’s unclear how or when Towns suffered the knee injury. He last played against the Portland Trail Blazers on Monday but only logged 21 minutes of action. Nevertheless, the timing could’t be worse for both Towns and the T-Wolves. 

Minnesota is currently the No. 1 seed in the Western Conference at 43–19, in no small part because of its franchise big man. The 28-year-old is averaging 22.1 points, 8.4 rebounds and three assists a game on 50.6% shooting from the field and just appeared in his fourth All-Star Game.

Without Towns, the Timberwolves’ championship hopes take a major hit. The playoffs are set to start April 20 with Minnesota’s last game of the regular season set to take place on April 14 against the Phoenix Suns.
