76ers Not Expected to Extend Tyrese Maxey This Offseason

In this story:
The Philadelphia 76ers feel good about Tyrese Maxey’s future in the NBA. Since joining the Sixers as their lone first-round pick in 2020, Maxey has developed into a potential future All-Star. While the Sixers seem interested in keeping him around long-term, they won’t lock him up just yet.
According to ESPN’s Ramona Shelburne, the Sixers do not plan to extend Maxey’s contract this summer. The good news is Maxey won’t be going anywhere for next season. As the team exercised his option for the 2023-2024 season, Maxey is on board and set to make $4 million for the year.
Beyond next season, however, is a question mark. When next summer rolls around, Maxey is set to hit the free agency market as a restricted prospect. If it gets to that point, there’s a high chance Maxey will have a market of suitors looking to bring him on.
When Maxey went through the pre-draft process ahead of the 2020 NBA Draft, he was coming off his freshman season at Kentucky. Although Maxey was projected to be a lottery selection, he slid to the Sixers at 21st overall.
During his rookie season, Maxey had an inconsistent role off the bench. He appeared in 61 games, averaging 15 minutes in his appearances. During year one, Maxey put up eight points per game while knocking down 46 percent of his shots and 30 percent of his threes.
Maxey’s sophomore effort went a lot differently. After starting in just eight games during year one, the young guard became a full-time starter in the absence of Ben Simmons. With an increased role, Maxey averaged 35 minutes on the floor, putting up 18 points per game while draining 43 percent of his threes.
While Maxey lost his starting role for a small stretch during year three, he still averaged 34 minutes on the court throughout 60 games. Maxey improved once again, averaging 20 points while hitting on 43 percent of his shots from beyond the arc.
At some point, the Sixers are going to have to consider locking in Maxey for the long term. In an attempt to “preserve flexibility,” according to Shelburne, the Sixers will delay an extension for the former first-round pick for the time being.
