In Porter's absence, 23-year-old breakout Ryan Rollins has been making a case that he deserves Porter's old job — even when Porter does recover. In nine healthy games for the Bucks thus far this season (eight starts), Rollins has been averaging 16.7 points while slashing .518/.422/.850, 5.4 assists, 3.7 rebounds, and 2.0 steals per.

His previous high? Rollins averaged 6.2 points on .487/.408/.800 shooting splits, 1.9 rebounds, 1.9 assists and 0.8 steals in 56 healthy bouts (19 starts) with the Bucks last year, his first season as a full-time role player. He had been toggled between the Bucks, Washington Wizards and Golden State Warriors during the previous two seasons.
Is this level of production sustainable, or is it just a hot start, necessitated by the Porter injury?
Time will tell. Rollins certainly has the athletic gifts to deserve a long-term NBA home. And if he keeps producing like this, the Bucks will no doubt strive to ensure that home is Milwaukee for years to come.
Whatever Porter's role, losing him for several more weeks does represent a blow to the Bucks' depth.
Milwaukee's Quest for Post-Damian Lillard Help at the Point
The Bucks have been on the hunt for a serious replacement at the point since general manager Jon Horst made the difficult decision to stretch and waive the contract of nine-time All-Star Damian Lillard over the summer, making room to sign rim-rolling center Myles Turner to a four-year, $108.9 million free agent contract.
Lillard tore his Achilles tendon during the playoffs and will miss the entire 2025-26 season. There's also no guarantee the 35-year-old regains his superstar form even when he does recuperate — which will now happen with the Portland Trail Blazers.
Milwaukee re-signed Porter to a two-season, $10.5 million contract this summer after acquiring him from the L.A. Clippers in a trade deadline deal. The Bucks also re-signed Rollins to a three-season, $12 million agreement in free agency.
