It helps to have short-term memory in the NBA. Many of the league’s all-time greats have had that ability to forget about a tough loss and move on to the next game. And that’s exactly what Ayo Dosunmu, the standout guard for the Chicago Bulls, is doing after his team suffered a surprising 105-95 defeat at the hands of the league-worst Detroit Pistons.

Hot streak snapped

Dosunmu came into the game on a hot streak, averaging nearly 16 points per game over the last 17 matches, shooting 56 percent from the field, including 51 percent from long distance. However, Dosunmu couldn’t get anything to go against the Pistons and finished with only eight points on 4-of-14 shooting, missing all five three-point attempts.

But instead of dwelling on this disappointing performance, Dosunmu quickly shifted his focus to the next game against the Cleveland Cavaliers on Wednesday.

“It’s disappointing because it’s late in the season,” Dosunmu said.

“We understand the importance and sense of urgency we have to play with every night. I think we let one slip away. The beauty of basketball is in less than 24 hours, we get to lace them back up and play a Cleveland team that beat us three times, and we have some battles with them.”

The nature of the NBA

As freakish as the Bulls’ three-point shooting performance—2 for 29—was on Tuesday, it’s also a reminder of just how unpredictable and dynamic the NBA can be. In an 82-game season, there are bound to be off nights.

“You take it. It’s the beauty of basketball. Some nights, you go 6-for-6 or 7-for-7, and some nights, the ball doesn’t go in. That’s when you have to focus in on those details and grind it out, get to the free-throw line,” Dosunmu remarked.
