The report indicates Alex Caruso's shot volume needs to go up

Alex Caruso has never been known for his long-distance shooting. However, it doesn’t mean he’s not capable of knocking them down at a proficient rate. Although the former Texas A&M ace has made a career for locking opposing players down, a report by Grant Hughes of Bleacher Report indicates the fan-favorite should be firing from beyond the arc more.

Career-high efficiency

While Caruso has been his usual pesky self on defense, the Bulls have also benefited from his improved shooting, especially from three-point country. This season, he’s making 47 percent from beyond the arc while taking 3.4 attempts per game. That’s an impressive feat for a player who wasn’t known as a shooter at all when he first entered the league.

However, Hughes argues that Caruso should be shooting the ball more to maximize his efficiency from that area. This would add even more value to a guard who’s already coveted by nearly every team in the NBA.

“Caruso is on the shortest list of the league's best defensive guards, and he might even be at the top of it. That he's also drilling 47.2 percent of his threes and making $9.4 million this year (partially guaranteed $9.9 million in 2024-25) illustrates why virtually every team in the league should want him on the roster,” Hughes wrote.

“This is all to say that Caruso could be even more valuable if he upped his long-distance volume to the point that his offense was more than an afterthought.”

Isn’t thinking about it

Caruso explained in November that the reason why he’s making more three-pointers this season is because he doesn’t think about the results as much.

"This is probably the most unattached to results that I’ve been in my life basketball-wise as far as shots going in or out. And that’s probably why I’m making most of them. There’s a part of me that doesn’t care," Caruso said.

"If I’m open, I shoot it. I’m playing basketball, competing to win. If it’s the right shot, take it. Trust the work. I worked really hard this summer and this preseason and during the season. There’s no reason not to shoot them."
