"You're talking about a relationship of, like, a brotherhood of me and D-Rose" - Patrick Beverley speaks of the bond between him and Derrick Rose

In this story:
They may not be on the same team, but Chicago Bulls guard Patrick Beverley and Derrick Rose of the New York Knicks have a bond forged through shared history. Their friendship goes back to the days of competing in the IHSA Class AA state basketball tournament, where Rose played for Simeon and defeated Beverley and Marshall in the semifinals en route to capturing the state title as a junior.
High school rivals
As fierce as their battle was, it soon paved the way for mutual respect and a relationship that has stood the test of time.
"You're talking about a relationship of, like, a brotherhood of me and D-Rose. We talk all the time. His friends are my friends. My friends are his friends. 'I need a car, D-Rose. I need somewhere to stay. Give me a place. Anything you want, Pat,'" shared Beverley.
Beverley, who recently signed with the Chicago Bulls, says he recalls how epic their high school rivalry was. As a senior for Marshall, Beverley was arguably the best player in Illinois, with averages of 37.3 points, six rebounds, six assists, and whopping eight steals per game. Rose, on the other hand, was the up-and-coming star who was as big of a prospect as any high school player in the country.
"When you're in it, you're so focused on the ball that you don't even know you're in it," Beverley said. "At that age, you're just trying to win some basketball games."
Brotherhood unlike any other
Although their basketball careers were quite different, the bond between Beverley and Rose has remained strong throughout their respective professional journeys.
"Our brotherhood is way deeper than basketball. Like, we're real brothers," Beverley proudly shared.
And as Beverley has returned to their hometown, he got some pretty solid advice from his good friend.
"To come here after him and kind of represent the city the right way and embrace it a little bit more, that's been my thing. Just embrace it. That's some advice he gave me, that he says he wished he would've done more and that's embrace the city," Beverley concluded.
