Kenny Atkinson Reveals Who He Truly Credits for Cavs Clinching NBA Playoffs

In this story:
The Cleveland Cavaliers have finally punched their ticket to the NBA playoffs.
It wasn’t easy, and their playoff-clinching 118-111 victory over the Golden State Warriors on Thursday night typified their plight this season, and head coach Kenny Atkinson knew that as he almost breathed a sigh of relief during his postgame press conference.
But upon reflection, Atkinson revealed that the key factor in helping the Cavs reach the playoffs was. That needed to be credited for the arrivals of James Harden, Keon Ellis and Dennis Schroder.
“Listen, give our friends up at front office a lot of credit,” Atkinson said, crediting chairman Dan Gilbert, President of Basketball Operations Koby Altman and the board their flowers.
“They knew we weren't clicking necessarily, and to make that shift to bring James [Harden], Keon [Ellis], and Dennis [Schroder]. You saw Dennis, what he gave us tonight. I thought we needed his speed tonight. I thought it was really good.
“Kind of all those factors, you appreciate it a little more when you struggle.”
How Harden, Schroder and Ellis helped the Cavaliers during a difficult stretch
Whether it’s in Oakland or San Francisco, the Cavaliers have had fond memories of their trips to play the Golden State Warriors.
From winning the NBA title in iconic circumstances in 2016 and now clinching a hard-fought playoff spot this season – their fourth straight appearance - they had to win ugly in San Francisco, much like how they won the NBA crown nearly ten years ago.
Harden poured in 19 points and five assists, but was key in helping Cleveland maintain their composure in a game where the Cavs screamed guidance. You could argue that in the early stages of the season, that would have been a game lost. But it shows the difference two months make.

Schroder received a Flagrant 1 followed by a technical, seven seconds later, showcasing his passion and will to win, even if it meant going over the line. Still, the German international added 12 points and six assists. His pace, his clever thinking and experience were pivotal.
Ellis was tenacious and brought energy. Something that the Cavs also lacked in the early part of the season. Yes, injuries played their part, but closing games down the stretch, a lack of intensity was needed. Ellis provides the latter, especially when coming off the bench; it’s the main factor you need.
“We have a lot to prove,” Atkinson admits. “But I do believe this roster is more playoff-ready, and I could tick off the reasons why.
“[It] starts with [Harden], obviously. We added size and skill and IQ, which wins in the playoffs. You saw tonight how he kind of took over at the end and made all the right plays.
“I think we're a stronger team. I’m excited to see who we match up with and take that next step.”
