The Boston Celtics made the decision to sell to Bill Chisholm earlier this calendar year. Chisholm is a lifelong Celtics fan who seems committed to helping the team win titles.

Initially, Wyc Grousbeck was reported to be staying on as governor of the team for a couple of years, meaning that he was going to be making the decisions.

That is no longer happening. According to Shams Charania and Ramona Shelbourne of ESPN, Grousbeck will no longer stay on as governor of the team, as he was expected to through 2028.

Wyc Grousbeck will no longer stay on as governor of the Boston Celtics

Grousbeck will be out of the picture once the sale of the franchise becomes final, which should be soon. This is a similar situation to what the Mavericks dealt with with Mark Cuban.

Cuban was expected to stay on as governor and make the basketball decisions, but that ended up not happening. It seems Chisholm wants full and total control of the franchise moving forward.

Grousbeck helped oversee a great era of Celtics basketball, including winning two championships. He showed a commitment to spending a lot of money in order to win in 2024, too.

Chisholm clearly wanted the team to get under the second apron of the luxury tax this offseason. How much money he wants to spend on the team moving forward remains to be seen.

Celtics fans will find out just how much money he is willing to spend in order to win a title. He claims that he will make sure to spend as much money as necessary in order to do that.

This season, the team might not be in the luxury tax at all. With Jayson Tatum out with a torn Achilles, that makes sense. How much Chisholm spends next summer will show fans his true commitment to winning.

Grousbeck clearly wanted to stay on for as long as possible, but this is the risk that is run when someone sells a team to an outside party. They are going to want to run the show almost as soon as they get the new team.

Brad Stevens will continue to do what he does best, regardless of what budget he is given. Fans should trust in him to put together a solid roster.
