Report: New Details on Russell Westbrook to LA Clippers Talks

After acquiring Russell Westbrook from the Los Angeles Lakers, the Utah Jazz have given the veteran guard permission to speak with other teams around the league. Should Westbrook agree to a buyout with Utah, he will have an opportunity to sign anywhere as a free agent. One of the teams heavily linked to Westbrook is the LA Clippers, and new details recently emerged about the current state LA's discussions with the former MVP.

In an article from The Athletic's Law Murray and Shams Charania, it was confirmed that the Clippers have indeed been in contact with Westbrook, but it remains to be seen if he would be open to the role the team has available for him.

According to Murray and Charania, "The Clippers would see Westbrook as a potential starter with George, Kawhi Leonard, Marcus Morris Sr., and Ivica Zubac. That does not mean Westbrook would close, as Lue coaches off of feel around George and Leonard."

While the Clippers potentially see Westbrook as a starter, Murray and Charania added that it remains to be seen whether or not he would be willing to accept the role the Clippers have for him, as the nine-time All-Star is seeking a significant role.

From all of the reports around the possibility of Westbrook joining the Clippers, along with what has been said publicly, it seems reasonable to determine that there is a level of mutual interest between the two sides. Any potential disconnect will likely be related to the size of Westbrook's role with the Clippers, as the team cannot offer him the same level of guaranteed minutes that other suitors could.

Both Westbrook and the Clippers will almost certainly use this upcoming All-Star break to weigh all options before choosing a course of action.
