It was reported on Thursday morning by The Athletic's Shams Charania that the Memphis Grizzlies are trading David Roddy to the Phoenix Suns in exchange for a pick swap. Roddy had emerged as a rotation piece for Memphis this season amid their large collection of injuries. Getting a shot in the rotation at times last season as well, Roddy showed some real flashes that had the Grizzlies excited, but they now move on from him in exchange for a pick swap.
No longer in the playoff picture this season, the Grizzlies have to make moves with an eye for next season. Perhaps they feel that dealing Roddy in exchange for this pick swap can help them remain a bit more flexible when building out next season's roster around Ja Morant, and the rest of their core.
It remains to be seen whether or not this is the last move Memphis plans to make, but it’s one of several they have already been involved in this year’s deadline. For Phoenix, they bring in Roddy at a very low price, getting a solid athlete and tough defender who will likely get a chance in their rotation.
