NBA Explains Reasoning Behind Giving Boston Celtics Extra Time Against Miami Heat

The Boston Celtics originally had 2.1 seconds left to score but were given three seconds after the officiating ruling

Several Miami Heat fans were upset about why the Boston Celtics were given an extra .9 seconds on the clock after it appeared Jimmy Butler was fouled with 2.1 seconds remaining Saturday against the Boston Celtics in Game 6 of the Eastern Conference finals.

On Sunday evening, the NBA explained its reasoning in the officials report.

“Replay review of the foul called on Horford (BOS) pursuant to a coach’s challenge was deemed unsuccessful. Horford (BOS) made contact with Butler (MIA) during his shooting motion and a foul was warranted. During the review, the Replay Center Official also determined that i) the foul occurred at 3.0 seconds and adjusted the clock accordingly; and ii) Butler’s shot attempt was taken from behind the three-point line, and therefore three free throws were awarded.”

The Celtics advantage of the extra seconds. Derrick White tipped in a missed 3-pointer by Marcus Smart that resulted in a 104-103 victory. The win kept the Celtics alive in the series.

Game 7 is Monday in Boston.
