Miami Heat's new star player is already looking ahead

Most people that spend over 40 percent of their lives in one city are going to miss it if they leave. It’s no different for Giannis Antetokounmpo, as he is already talking about eventually going back one day — if they’ll have him, he wonders, when he will always be the one of two special guys who got away.

Antetokounmpo obviously means no harm, but these comments indicate that a timeline, perhaps subliminally, has been set. This type of pressure from an important figure, in many cases, is a good thing as others won’t take the time for granted.

Still, it could make someone uncomfortable to hear about a new partner’s ex, even more so when they say they "bleed purple and green." In the Heat’s case, their old big-time player, LeBron James, had it all, but ditched them for his old team. It hurt many fans to see him go, but it was unreasonable to hold it against him, especially after he played a major part in delivering two rings.

James was gone after four years. The Shaquille O’Neal and Dwyane Wade combo lasted three-and-a-half seasons, and Jimmy Butler was in Miami for five-and-a-half, but four before it got stale. These builds go quickly, and the Antetokounmpo era could be anywhere between three and five years.

Keep in mind that Antetokounmpo, going into year 14, is a better player at this stage than O'Neal in 2004-05, so all the more reason why it might be unsettling to some decision-makers if they haven't won by year three.

Before the Big-Three took off, one of the brief outside-of-Miami concerns of pairing Wade and James was that it could be clunky because they were not prolific outside shooters. But great players figured it out as Chris Bosh and James elevated in those departments.

Currently, 3-point shooting is up approximately 90 percent since the Big-Three years, and the Heat’s two best players — Antetokounmpo and Bam Adebayo — are not dependable outside shooters. That could change for Adebayo, since he works on it relentlessly, but it’s not a necessity for them, as long as the role players can knock down big shots in big games.

The Heat have been aggressive this summer, signing Klay Thompson, and Tim Hardaway Jr. to be a fill-in sniper if necessary. They’ll need to match the results in the future to maximize the team and keep Antetokounmpo happy, especially before he extends.

It needs to be more than signing shooters because the other area they can’t afford to have slippage is point-of-attack defense. That area seems solid now, and accounting for how much more physical the playoffs are, it may be one of their top strengths if they show up healthy enough.

From now on, every year with Antetokounmpo has to have a deep playoff trip because of all that's invested and with the standard set by the last three star builds in which they got to a Finals or Conference Finals in their first year. The best way to ensure is that having a strong regular season with at least 50 wins. They can’t run the risk of Antetokounmpo wanting out early.
