How Klay Thompson's decision lifts Miami Heat's offseason to epic levels

After missing out on LeBron James, Miami added a future Hall of Famer after all

It speaks to how hungry Heat nation is that landing Giannis Antetokounmpo simply wasn’t enough to satisfy the masses.

Another description could be substituted above, and I’m not referencing using a thesaurus for famished or starving. Spoiled babies could be used. Desperate to be relevant again works too. Relentless in the pursuit of another title? Sure.

The summer of 2026 will forever be remembered for delivering a pair of Hall of Famers to Miami now that Klay Thompson has decided he’d like to spend the next few years getting clean looks thanks to the double teams the “Greek Freak” commands. Picking up his commitment just before the weekend kicked off provided a great excuse to celebrate at the beach with a few extra cocktails, or at church giving thanks. 

Hallelujah, the Heat just might be back. 

"Klay is one of the most iconic players to ever suit up in the NBA," Pat Riley said. "A four-time battle-tested world champion who will fit perfectly into his role as an all-around player at both ends of the court. We all talk about his shooting skill, but there is so much more he brings to the game. We are blessed that Klay chose the Heat in our quest to challenge for championships."

If Antetokounmpo and Thompson have as much left in the tank as I believe they do, Miami will immediately compete for the Eastern Conference title. Put them on the short list next to New York, Philadelphia, Cleveland, Boston and Indiana.

That take isn’t going to be shared by most, but understand  I don’t care for the franchise one way or the other. That’s an unbiased opinion. If guys stay healthy, the drive to succeed will be there to execute Erik Spoelstra’s vision, which means Miami will be a major factor when the playoffs roll around. If you paid close attention to Riley's statement, you'll notice he used championships in plural form and correctly deemed the Heat blessed by Klay's choice. Yes, that has Bron-ish undertones.

What stands out most about Thompson arriving as the Heat’s final major piece is how it helps cushion the blow of missing out on LeBron James’ return. That looked like a good possibility for a few weeks until he chose Philadelphia. Suddenly, it felt like Miami hadn’t done enough to be serious players.

Reflect, does that make you spoiled or tortured? The Pat Riley-led front office has been serving up fixes ever since James returned to Cleveland, so it’s understandable every facelift is frustration-fueled. Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh couldn’t hold it together due to unfortunate injuries. 

Jimmy Butler was polarizing, earning respect by leaving it all out there until he didn’t. The entire process over the past decade-plus has been exhausting. Tyler Herro was fun, but he’ll be booed by many when he returns. Miami was stomped in the ‘23 NBA Finals and was the No. 8 seed. The ride was a blast, but the Denver Nuggets made the ending so grim it’s hard to embrace. As the 2020 Finals appearance moves further away in the rear-view, it can be understood how it also seems unsatisfying given the bubble and the juggernaut status the franchise once enjoyed. 

That’s why the LeBron news was such a buzzkill. Even before Giannis’ first training camp, it felt like there wasn’t enough around him to truly be excited about. That’s nonsensical, but what most of Heat nation collectively felt. Having traded away so much young talent and draft capital, it’s championship or bust the rest of the decade and everyone knows it.

Thompson provides validation Miami is again a desired destination. He chose South Florida. L.A., his hometown, was in play. Golden State fans dreamed of a reunion. Heat fans salivated at the Instagram video where he essentially shunned that thought and embraced his decision as a new beginning.

Antetokounmpo might even be right to be a little jealous of the love Klay is set to receive. The same goes for Tim Hardaway Jr. as both embark on the mission of supplying the Heat with 3-pointers in flurries.

Although Antetokounmpo is going to be the main attraction, he was traded to Miami. Bobby Portis is going to be a fan favorite, but he was included in the blockbuster deal. 

Thompson gave up nearly $10 million to get out of Dallas so he could play elsewhere and wanted that next destination to be South Florida. Take that, Bron! Ironically, if James had chosen to return, Thompson would’ve had to sacrifice even more to come on board since the Heat wouldn’t have been able to offer him anything near as lucrative as the two-year, $11.5 million deal he officially agreed to Sunday night upon clearing waivers.

Thompson is still actively seeking post-Warriors glory after coming up empty with the Mavericks, so the chip on his shoulder is massive. That will endear him to Heat nation even more because there’s shared pain there. He now joins Andrew Wiggins the most recent champion on the roster, having won in ‘22 after having two seasons stolen from him due to ACL and Achilles injuries.

In South Florida, he'll be reunited with Wiggins, whose role would've been dramatically impacted if James had decided he wanted to author another chapter with the Heat. Ironically, LeBron choosing the 76ers worked out better for both former Warriors, who will now be counted on more than they would've if things had worked out differently.

Thompson quickly deciding Miami is where he wanted to be once he got his buyout makes everything right in Heat land. It restores faith that's everything is as it's meant to be. He'll wear No. 11, which is a departure from Antetokounmpo's decision not to wear No. 34 for his new team. To each their own.

The Splash Brothers are iconic and will forever be linked. Thompson spoke of ending his career in Golden State at Fanatics fest last month and said “it would be nice.” Antetokounmpo has spoken of his desire to end his career in Milwaukee multiple times over the last few months. That won’t make it any less special if this new tandem is successful adding to their legacies by bringing another championship to Miami. 

They’re already Springfield shoo-ins, but they’re hungry for more. Starving. Famished.
