Richardson was once considered part the cornerstone of the Heat organization during the 2018-19 season. They made him the go-to guy as part of their transitioning from Dwyane Wade as the franchise player. While Richardson was solid in his role as the No. 1 option, the Heat felt they needed more. After his one season in the leading role, the Heat decided to trade for Butler that offseason.
So far, the move has paid off. With Butler, the Heat have made two NBA Finals since 2020. Richardson is expected to serve a complementary role in his return to Miami.
