Raptors Player Under Investigation by NBA After Loss vs. Kings

Toronto big man Jontay Porter is under investigation for irregular prop betting.

The Sacramento Kings handily took down the Toronto Raptors last Wednesday, but a dramatic scandal being uncovered is adding to the story. ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski reports that Raptors C Jontay Porter is under investigation for "irregularities on prop betting involving him."

The suspicion began on January 26, as the Raptors hosted the Los Angeles Clippers. There was "increased betting interest on the under for Porter props," as Porter went on to play just four minutes before exiting the game due to an aggravation of an eye injury. Due to leaving the game prematurely, the under of all of Porter's props hit, as he finished with zero points, three rebounds, and one assist.

The next day, DraftKings Sportsbook reported that "the under on Porter's 3-pointers was the biggest money winner for bettors of any NBA player props from games that evening." This odd occurrence is already fishy, but the case against Porter builds stronger nearly two months later.

Last Wednesday, March 20, the Raptors hosted the Kings, and another strange Porter situation arose. Toronto's backup big man played just three minutes before exiting due to an illness, finishing with zero points, zero assists, and two rebounds. Again, the next day, DraftKings Sportsbook reported that Porter's prop bets were the top NBA moneymaker from that night.

A source told Wojnarowski, "People were trying to do whatever they could to bet Jontay Porter props [against the Clippers], and then, just a few days ago, the same thing. We had a bunch of people trying to bet under for more."

The Kings won 123-89, but the NBA must control the Porter situation, as players gambling on their own props creates a slippery slope that is not good for the game of basketball. While it is not proven Porter was directly involved in the situation, the accusations are convincing and there will likely be consequences for Porter.
