NBA Insider 'Not Expecting' Michael Porter Jr.-Nets Contract Extension

Tuesday was a big day for the Brooklyn Nets and Michael Porter Jr., although it might not have seemed that way on the surface. As both sides continue to navigate contract extension talks, Aug. 11 posed a deadline that could have given the two parties as much flexibility as possible.

Had they agreed to an extension on Tuesday, the six-month window keeping the Nets from moving Porter would have ended on Feb. 11, this season's trade deadline. Now that the date has passed, Brooklyn would be locked in with the 28-year-old for the entire 2026-27 season if a deal is reached in the future. The actual deadline to land an extension is June 30.

MPJ is coming off a career year in which he averaged 24.2 points, 7.1 rebounds, 3.0 assists and 1.1 steals per game on 46-36-86 shooting splits. He had legitimate buzz as an All-Star leading up to the end of voting because, although Brooklyn was rebuilding, he was taking full advantage of his shot volume and scoring with high efficiency.

But that might not be enough for the Nets to prolong their partnership with Porter, at least according to one NBA insider. On Tuesday, Jake Fischer of Bleacher Report said he isn't expecting a Nets-Porter extension.

While Porter isn't the only contract extension the Nets have to worry about, he is by far the most important. The 6-foot-10 wing was paired with another ball-dominant forward in Julius Randle this offseason, which means they will have to figure out how to coexist on top of a young guard core looking to burst onto the scene.

If Porter and the organization can't reach an extension, trade rumors should arise leading up to the February deadline. Last season, Porter drew varying levels of interest from multiple teams, but the Nets chose to keep him for a full first year in Brooklyn. The star forward has embraced the city and organization despite being traded from a championship contender, the Denver Nuggets.

Porter will make $40.8 million in the final season of a five-year, $179.3 million rookie max extension signed with the Nuggets back in 2021. He was traded to the Nets in 2025 for Cam Johnson and a 2032 first-round pick.

Now, he's eligible for a four-year, $234 million extension (AAV of $58.5 million) with the Nets, although he probably won't receive that much money. Brooklyn is still prioritizing flexibility, as general manager Sean Marks has harped on numerous times this offseason.
