Cameron Thomas had a fantastic performance against the Boston Celtics, scoring 26 points. He almost led the Nets in a huge comeback, but Boston was too much to overcome in the fourth quarter.

Despite his aggression with his scoring, Cam only had two free-throw attempts. It was surprising for Cam because he felt contact on multiple drives to the paint and some pull-up jump shots.

“I've definitely noticed a shift in officiating toward me for some reason, I don't know what the reason is. I’ll just keep trying to attack, keep drawing fouls, playing my game, keeping the pressure on the defense, trying to get to the line as best I can,” Cam said after losing to the Celtics. “It’s tough. Two for two. As much as I go the basket and draw contact, two free throws is crazy.”

Cam is not just a jump shooter

NBA fans outside of the Brooklyn fan base might have misconceptions about Cam’s play style because he’s a bucket-getter. The former LSU Tiger does not only rely on jump shots as he regularly drives into the paint. In this game against Boston, he had multiple drives but only two trips to the line.

Shots from the charity stripe are the best opportunity for Cam to score, but Thomas did not receive the free throws he deserved. Nets fans have noticed the free throw woes because Cam is getting mauled in the paint without getting trips to the line.

Cam is frustrated because he’s getting mauled when he drives, but nothing is getting called. He was not angry with the situation but was annoyed after the loss to Boston.

Cam will become a more efficient scorer with free throws

Thomas is averaging 2.9 free throw attempts per game in his career. That is not a high enough metric for an elite scorer like him. Compared to Cam, Tyrese Maxey gets plenty of free throws, as the Philly All-Star is getting 5.6 trips to the charity stripe.

When Cam gets a better whistle, he will unlock a new dimension to his game. He will become one of the league’s best scorers because he’s already an elite scorer without it. The free throw shooting will also become a valuable weapon, especially if Cam is having a slow shooting night, as he can contribute with free throws.
