Grizzlies forward James Johnson was arrested in Memphis on Saturday morning on a domestic assault charge after an incident with his wife.
Johnson was booked into the Shelby County Jail at 4:35 a.m. and is scheduled to appear in court on Monday, according to the Associated Press.
The Memphis Commercial-Appeal reports further details regarding the alleged incident.
Johnson’s wife called police after an altercation in which she alleged to have been hit in the face with an open hand and choked.
Johnson also punched a hole in a bathroom door during the incident, according to the police affidavit. He left the scene and later returned to find officers interviewing his wife of two years. Johnson’s wife had no injuries to her face or neck, according to officers. She told police they both had been drinking.
Police charged Johnson with domestic assault-bodily harm.
The Grizzlies issued a statement on Saturday acknowledging the incident, but provided no additional details.
"We are currently gathering information regarding this morning’s report involving James Johnson," the Grizzlies' statement read. "We have no further comment at this time."
Johnson, 27, was signed to a one-year deal by the Grizzlies last December, and is set to become an unrestricted free agent this summer.
