Kyrie Irving to Sign with Spurs? Here's What Betting Odds Say

The intrigue of Victor Wembanyama and a ton of cap space makes the San Antonio Spurs an interesting team to bring up in the free agency conversation surrounding Kyrie Irving.

One of the best basketball players in the world and one of the most interesting yet controversial stars in the league, Kyrie Irving brings intrigue unmatched by few. So with the possibility of him landing with another team arising yet again ahead of the 2023 offseason, there's going to be some understandable buzz.

Irving spent about two months with the Dallas Mavericks this season after being traded by the Brooklyn Nets in February. Now set to be a free agent this offseason, he could already be heading somewhere new. Should the San Antonio Spurs take a swing at signing him? According to betting odds, it could be worth a shot.

A bit surprisingly, the Spurs made their way onto Bookies.com's betting list of teams most likely to sign Irving, holding the seventh-best odds (+1800, 5.3 percent). The Mavs lead the pack (+150) followed by the Los Angeles Lakers (+175), Los Angeles Clippers (+950), Houston Rockets (+1000), Atlanta Hawks (+1400) and Chicago Bulls (+1500).

San Antonio's inclusion here is likely boosted due to the inevitable arrival of Victor Wembanyama and the increased intrigue he could have alongside Irving. The team also has the cap space to land the superstar point guard, which would substantially aid the Spurs' biggest roster weakness.

However, Irving is eligible to sign a five-year contract worth up to $272.9 million if it were to return to Dallas. But if chooses to sign elsewhere, the best he could get is a four-year, $201.7 million deal. Keeping him to pair alongside Luka Doncic should be one of Dallas' top priorities, especially considering how elite Irving was all of last season.

He averaged 27.1 points, 5.1 rebounds, and 5.3 assists in 60 games, 20 of which came with the Mavs. Dallas missed the play-in after an odd late-season tanking attempt, but Irving had already proved he's in form after posting a pair of 40-point games in his short time in Dallas so far.

"I'm a free agent this summer, but I am in no rush to make a decision," Irving said on his Instagram Live from Wednesday. "When [these media personalities] speak on my name and they're talking about potential teams that I'm going to, can y'all please — I respectfully, I'm asking you — stop paying attention to that."

Will the Spurs sign Irving? It feels highly unlikely. But with their current cap space and budding roster, maybe it's worth a shot to try.
