LOOK: Spurs Honor Ex-Owner Red McCombs With Special Jersey Patch

The San Antonio Spurs debuted a new jersey patch Thursday night in honor of Red McCombs' death, which will remain a part of their uniforms for the remainder of the season.

The San Antonio Spurs looked a little different Thursday against the Indiana Pacers.

San Antonio added a flash of red to their jerseys in honor of the late Red McCombs, the former owner of the Spurs.

The patch is stitched on the players' left side, featuring the initials "RM" in white on top of a red background, and came shortly after McCombs’ death.

The San Antonio legend died at the age of 95, and spent time owning the Spurs, Nuggets and Vikings throughout his career. He meant a great deal to Spurs basketball, leaving a lasting impact largely due to him being the main reason that San Antonio has an NBA team to begin with.

In 1973, McCombs had his sights set on bringing basketball to HemisFair Arena — a newly built basketball arena that had been constructed in the area — and bought the Dallas Chaparrals of the ABA.

From there, he and his administration brought the Chaparrals to San Antonio and renamed them the Spurs, two years later making them an NBA team after the arrival of George Gervin — the first superstar under McCombs' leadership.

McCombs eventually sold his share of the team, but not before leaving his lasting mark on the franchise, and now, after his funeral Monday, the Spurs are returning the favor, and will proudly wear a patch on their jerseys in honor the 95-year-old for the remainder of the season.
