Paul initially exited Game 2 against the Denver Nuggets with a groin strain, suffered around the five minute mark of the third quarter. TNT's broadcast initially reported Paul not expected to return before the Suns officially ruled him out for the rest of the night with left groin tightness.
Paul finished his night with eight points on 4-of-10 shooting, though he did have five rebounds and six assists before leaving. The Suns ultimately lost 97-87 to fall behind in the series 2-0. He finished Game 1 with 11 points and five assists.
Paul, set to turn 38-years-old, has been criticized for his inability to either stay healthy or maintain a high level of play down the stretch of the postseason at this point in his career.
"Yeah, it just looks like he was boxing out and he just came up where you couldn't push off of it or anything. So, we aren't quite sure what it is but it seems to be something in the groin area so we will find out more tomorrow," said head coach Monty Williams following the game.
Phoenix's bench has largely been scrutinized for their failure to provide the Suns with adequate scoring. In last night's loss, Phoenix's bench scored just four points despite four of six bench players playing double digit minutes.
“I mean, whenever you lose your floor general, it is definitely a big loss. But this is a next man up league and I feel like we have more than enough to be able to sustain," said Josh Okogie.
Thus far in the playoffs, their bench has been outscored 223-100.
The likes of Damion Lee, Cameron Payne and Landry Shamet have proven unreliable at this point in the postseason.
Game 3 is on Friday, May 5.
