Suns Reveal Why They Traded Cam Payne

Phoenix Suns general manager James Jones revealed why the team moved Cameron Payne via trade.

The Phoenix Suns have undergone a massive roster overhaul this offseason - just two members of the beloved 2021 NBA Finals squad remain in the Valley.

That's part of the process new owner Mat Ishbia wanted after the Suns again fell short of expectations in the postseason, though it doesn't make losses any easier.

Backup point guard Cam Payne was indeed part of the transition - he was dealt to the San Antonio Spurs along with a 2025 second-round pick (via New Orleans) and cash considerations for a protected 2024 second-round pick.

Payne was a key part of Phoenix's second unit, earning the nickname "Turbo" for his ability to push the pace of play on the court while serving as a source of energy on the bench for his teammates.

Suns general manager James Jones recently appeared on Arizona Sports 98.7 and explained what made Phoenix pull the trigger on a move:

“(The Payne trade) was a part of a series of transactions that we made that we thought would give us roster balance and flexibility,” Jones said. “Cam was tremendous for us for the last three years, but we have changed the identity of our team. When you look at the types of players that we have on the floor, they have size, defensive versatility, length.

“When we thought about that position, you’re talking about (Devin Booker, Kevin Durant and Bradley Beal) having the ball in their hands and being high usage. We needed a different type of guard and I think we have that. But at the same time, we’re open to continue to try to figure out how to add those same traits, defensive versatility, at our guard position.”

Bradley Beal is expected to start at point guard with Jordan Goodwin ready to fill the backup role.
