Two young Thunder players are set to join the Team USA training camp roster.
Chet Holmgren and Jalen Williams, two of Oklahoma City’s 2022 draftees, are reported to be joining the training camp roster and will potentially participate in FIBA, per Shams Charania.
Both were set to be sophomores in the upcoming season. But Holmgren missed his initial season due to a Lisfranc injury suffered in a pro-am last summer. Despite that, he capped a solid 2023 Summer League slate with a 25-point, five-block performance versus Indiana that signaled he's still got it.
Williams finished as the runner-up in the 2022-23 Rookie of the Year Award race, averaging 14.1 points, 4.5 rebounds, 3.3 assists and 1.4 steals per game. He saw limited Summer League action, but was especially strong in his few minutes.
Training camp will being on Aug. 3 in Las Vegas. Both Holmgren and Williams will be part of the U.S. Select Team. They’ll be allowed to travel with the team and serve as replacements in case anybody on the main roster drops out due to injury or other reasons.
Thunder fans already had a reason to tune in, with All-NBA first teamer Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and defensive stalwart Luguentz Dort set to participate for Canada. Josh Giddey and new signee Jack White are expected to compete for Team Australia.
The 2023 FIBA World Cup begins on Aug. 25 and runs through Sept. 10.
