Steve Kerr Reveals Why Warriors Traded James Wiseman
The Golden State Warriors have officially moved on from former second-overall pick James Wiseman, sending the young big man to Detroit in a four-team deal that brought Gary Payton II back to the Warriors. It has been a rough start to Wiseman's young career, with injuries and inconsistent play leading to very little time on the court, but he still has supporters in the Warriors organization.
When asked why Wiseman was dealt, Warriors head coach Steve Kerr said, "Basically it just came down to his inexperience and where we are organizationally, trying to win a championship."
Understanding that their core does not have many more opportunities to compete for titles, the Warriors had to prioritize win-now moves over the development of a player like Wiseman. The trade projects to benefit both sides, as Wiseman will now have a chance at real rotation minutes, while the Warriors get back a player who was integral to their championship run last season.
Steph Curry recently spoke on Wiseman, saying, "We all love James, like that's the biggest thing. It's a guy you root for, it's a guy that you know will be able to figure it out, it's a guy that approaches each part of his job the right way, has a great attitude considering everything he's been through and the expectations around him and the conversations around him... A lot of confidence that he'll be around this league a long time."
While things did not work out in Golden State, Wiseman has supporters within the Warriors organization that want to see him thrive in Detroit.
