NFL Draft 2009
For the fourth straight year, Radio City Music Hall hosted the NFL draft. It marks the 45th consecutive year the event was held in New York City.
From left: Michael Crabtree, Aaron Curry, Brian Cushing, Josh Freeman, Eugene Monroe, Michael Oher, Brian Orakpo, Jason Smith and Matthew Stafford waited for their names to be announced.
Commissioner Roger Goodell, who presided over his third draft, wasted little time in announcing that with the No. 1 pick the Lions took ...
... Matthew Stafford, The selection was no surprise considering Detroit had already signed the Georgia quarterback to a six-year deal with $41.7 million in guarantees and a maximum value of $78 million.
While the Lions wasted no time, the Rams took theirs before selecting Baylor offensive tackle Jason Smith with the No. 2 pick. The 6-foot-4, 306-pounder was a converted tight end.
The Seahawks took Wake Forest linebacker Aaron Curry at No. 4, filling the need left by the departure of Julian Peterson. He is Seattle's highest pick since Shawn Springs was the Seahawks' No. 3 choice in 1997.
With the No. 8 pick, the Jaguars took Virginia's Eugene Monroe. He is the second offensive tackle taken in the first round by the Jaguars since Tony Boselli in 1995.
Michael Crabtree's slide was the 49ers' gain. They picked the Texas Tech wide receiver with the 10th pick. Crabtree's 231 catches are the most ever over a two-year span.
The Redskins selected Texas' Brian Orakpo at No. 13. The defensive end joins a unit that ranked last in the NFC in 2008 with just 24 sacks.
At No. 15 the Texans took USC outside linebacker Brian Cushing. He had 74 tackles and three sacks as a senior.
