Chris Johnson signs deal with Jets

The New York Jets have a new home-run threat in the backfield.

After lingering on the free agent market, Chris Johnson has signed a two-year deal with the Jets. ESPN's Adam Schefter was the first to report the news. Per multiple reports, his deal is worth $8 million with another $1 million in incentives.

The 28-year-old Johnson has rushed for at least 1,000 yards in every one of his six NFL seasons, and he had a breakthrough 2,006-yard 2009 season that earned him both his nickname ('CJ2K') and the AP Offensive Player of the Year honor.

Johnson met with the Jets Tuesday, but reportedly left team facilities without a deal. He joins a backfield that currently boasts Chris Ivory (833 rushing yards, three touchdowns in 2013) and Bilal Powell (697 yards, one touchdown in '13), and adds to a Jets' offseason haul that includes wide receiver Eric Decker and quarterback Michael Vick.

Drafted 24th overall by the Tennessee Titans in 2008, Johnson spent six seasons with the team, totaling almost 8,000 yards on the ground and 58 total touchdowns. Tennessee attempted to trade Johnson earlier in the offseason, but when it couldn't find any suitors, it parted ways with the running back and his $8 million cap hit.

Grade: B. The Jets likely did not -- or, at least, should not have -- signed Johnson expecting him to overtake Chris Ivory as the No. 1 back. The lack of interest Johnson drew once he hit the market plus his obvious struggles over the past couple seasons make it pretty apparent that he's no longer a game-breaking, 25 carry-per-night guy. At about half of that workload, split between run and pass plays, he still should have enough in the tank to produce some value. -- Chris Burke
