The Atlanta Falcons went 4-12 in 2013, a year after finishing the regular season 13-3. Wide receiver Julio Jones missed the season after injuring his foot in Week 5, and Roddy White battled injuries throughout the year. In the offseason, Atlanta focused on rebuilding the trenches, signing defensive linemen Tyson Jackson and Paul Soliai and selecting offensive tackle Jake Matthews sixth overall in the draft.

The Falcons also signed longtime Chicago Bears return specialist Devin Hester

Atlanta lost a weapon in the passing game when Tony Gonzalez retired. The Falcons brought in reinforcements in the secondary in corners Javier Arenas and Josh Wilson
