Cleveland Browns head coach Mike Pettine said Friday Johnny Manziel can still win the starting quarterback job, and expects the rookie to face the Washington Redskins' starters at some point in the teams' preseason game Monday, according to Tom Withers of the Associated Press

On Thursday, Pettine announced that Brian Hoyer will start at quarterback against Washington, but the plan is for reps with the first-team offense to be split equally between Hoyer and Manziel.

Pettine is hoping to choose a Week 1 starter as early as Tuesday, the day after the game.

Manziel took reps with the Browns' starting offense on Friday.

The Heisman Trophy winner was reportedly late to a team meeting Monday, but the rookie's mistake isn't said to have factored into Pettine's decision to start Hoyer against Washington.
