The 49ers finished the 2013 regular season at 12-4 and lost to the eventual-champion Seahawks in the NFC championship game. It was the third consecutive season that San Francisco advanced at least as far as the conference championship game.

The 2013 season was Colin Kaepernick's first full season as the 49ers' starting quarterback. He averaged the eight-most yards per attempt in the NFL. Kaepernick was rewarded with a six-year, $126 million contract extension with $61 million guaranteed.

The defense will be missing a few key players from last season. Safety Donte Whitnersigned with the Browns in free agency and linebacker Aldon Smith was suspended by the league for nine games.
