Panthers quarterback Cam Newton is inactive for Carolina's Week 1 game against the Buccaneers, the team announced

Newton suffered a hairline rib fracture in Carolina's Aug. 22 preseason game.

Newton had said Thursday that he was "on pace" to play Sunday, and was "not limited" in Friday's practice, according to head coach Ron Rivera.

Derek Anderson will start under center for the Panthers. Anderson has thrown four passes since joining the Panthers in 2011.
