The Miami Dolphins re-signed running back Daniel Thomas for the remainder of the season after having cut him at the end of training camp, coach Joe Philbin announced Monday

The Miami Herald reported the news earlier Monday.

The Dolphins need depth at the position after starter Knowshon Moreno dislocated his elbow in team’s loss to the Buffalo Bills in Week 2. Moreno is expected to be out for up to eight weeks.

Thomas, who reportedly worked out for the New England Patriots, spent his first three seasons with the Dolphins after being the team’s second-round pick in 2011.

He totaled 1,312 rushing yards and eight touchdowns in his first stint with the team, but only averaged 3.6 yards a carry.
