The San Francisco 49ers are considering Eric Mangini for their vacant defensive coordinator position, reports Matt Barrows of The Sacramento Bee.

Mangini served as the 49ers' tight ends coach in 2014 after spending 2013 as an offensive consultant for the team. His previous background was on defense, as he served as the New England Patriots' defensive coordinator in 2005 after spending 2000-04 as defensive backs coach.

Mangini, who turned 44 on Monday, also had two head-coaching stints with the Cleveland Browns (2009-10) and New York Jets (2006-08).

The Oakland Raiders reportedly interviewed Mangini this week for their defensive coordinator position, and Mangini also previously met with the Washington Redskins.

According to Barrows, the 49ers have also interviewed former Raiders defensive coordinator Jason Tarver for an unknown position. Tarver spent 2005-10 as the 49ers' outside linebackers coach and 2001-04 as an offensive assistant.

Vic Fangio, who spent 2011-14 as the 49ers' defensive coordinator, was hired by the Chicago Bears on Tuesday.

San Francisco finished 8-8 in 2014, missing the playoffs for the first time in four seasons. The defense finished fifth in total defense (321.4 yards allowed per game) and 10th in scoring defense (21.2 points allowed per game).
