DUI case against cornerback P.J. Williams dropped
The DUI case against former Florida State cornerback P.J. Williams has been dropped, the State of Florida announced on Monday, according to Rand Getlin of Yahoo Sports.
Williams, an NFL draft prospect, was arrested on charges of DUI on April 3 in Leon County, Fla. The arresting officer said Williams refused to perform field sobriety exercises but observed that Williams had "red, watery eyes" and could detect a "strong odor" of alcoholic beverage coming from the vehicle.
The State of Florida said the charge against Williams was dismissed because there was not enough evidence that would "prove this defendant was impaired beyond a reasonable doubt" to a jury. The state said "significant portions of the DUI investigation were not captured on video due to the positioning of the officer's patrol video," and said a brief period in which Williams is on camera does not provide evidence that proves he was impaired beyond a reasonable doubt.
Last week, Williams appeared on SI Now and said he "had a few drinks" that night and is "owning my mistake today." The cornerback said NFL teams have asked him about the arrest but "haven't really questioned my character."
Williams was also involved in a hit-and-run accident in October, which was the subject of a New York Times investigation. The Times found that Williams was given preferential treatment by the Tallahassee Police Department in the case.
The NFL draft begins this Thursday.
