San Francisco 49ers tight end Garrett Celek says quarterback Blaine Gabbert is taking control during workouts, reports CSN Bay Area’s Matt Maiocco.

“He’s definitely taking control,” said Celek, who is entering his fifth campaign with the 49ers in 2016. “Whoever’s at quarterback needs to take control and be our leader out there. And he’s definitely doing that. He’s making good decisions on the field.

“I think he’s definitely developing more and more as the days go on. But, right now, we’re all in the same boat learning this offense.”

Gabbert, 26, took over for former starter Colin Kaepernick last season in Week 9. In eight games in 2015, Gabbert threw for 2,031 yards, 10 touchdowns and seven interceptions.

Kaepernick, who finished the 2015 season on IR due to a torn labrum in his non-throwing shoulder, underwent surgeries on his right thumb and left knee in January, after undergoing left shoulder surgery in November. The signal caller, who has been the focus of trade rumors this off-season, is expected to be cleared by doctors at the end of May or beginning of June.
