Texans’ DeAndre Hopkins ends holdout, will return to camp
Houston Texans wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins has ended his holdout and will return to training camp without a new contract, he said in a statement.
Hopkins did not report to camp on Saturday in an attempt to negotiate a new contract with Houston, although the team has no interest in talking about an extension at this point, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter and Tania Ganguli.
He was placed on the reserve/did not report list by the team on Sunday.
“We are disappointed DeAndre has elected not to report to training camp with the rest of his teammates,” Texans general manager Rick Smith said in an earlier statement. “He has expressed his position regarding his contract status, and we have been clear with both he and his representatives of ours. Our focus is on the 2016 season and all of our collective efforts and attention with be centered on that endeavor.”
Hopkins emerged as Houston’s number one wide receiver over the last two seasons, leading the team with 1,521 receiving yards, 11 touchdowns and 111 receptions as the team cycled through four different starting quarterbacks in 2015.
The former Clemson standout is still on his rookie contract and is set to make $1 million in base salary along with $1.3 million in bonuses this season.
The third-year wideout has been vocal about his excitement to begin working with Brock Osweiler, the former Broncos quarterback who signed a four year, $72 million contract with $37 million guaranteed with the team in the off-season.
