Los Angeles Rams head coach Jeff Fisher says that rookie quarterback Jared Goff will be inactive for the team's season opener against the San Francisco 49ers on Sept. 12.

Case Keenem will be the starter, with Sean Mannion backing up Keenem and punter Johnny Hekker slated to be the Rams' emergency backup quarterback.

"I just want him to feel and sense and absorb the pressures of Week 1," Fisher told the NFL Network. "He's going to be a great player. As we've said from day one, we're not rushing him. We don't have to rush it. I'm really happy with where he is right now."

Fisher added that it's unfair to compare Goff to anyone else, specifically referring to the situation in Philadelphia, where No. 2 overall pick Carson Wentz will start the team's Week 1 contest against the Cleveland Browns.

In three appearances this preseason, Goff, the No. 1 overall pick in the 2016 NFL draft, completed 45% of his passes with two touchdowns and two interceptions. He was also sacked four times and fumbled twice.

Fisher reiterated that the team is pleased with how Goff's is learning the offense, adding that he is the team's franchise quarterback, "just not right now."

"Jared is in a good place right now. He's done some really good things, so I'm really pleased with his progress," Fisher said.
