The Denver Broncos defeated the Carolina Panthers 21–20 in the NFL season opener on Thursday night.

Cam Newton threw for 194 yards and broke two NFL records, but it was not enough to boost the Panthers to victory as kicker Graham Gano missed a field goal in the final seconds of the fourth quarter.

New Broncos starting quarterback Trevor Siemian threw for 178 yards and one touchdown to help his team pick up their first win of the season, though he also threw two interceptions.

Thursday's game was the first Super Bowl rematch scheduled for the first game of the regular season since 1970. The Broncos defeated the Panthers in Super Bowl 50 for the franchise’s third championship title.

The Broncos will take on the Colts next Sunday, while the Panthers will face the 49ers.
