Cardinals’ Colt McCoy to Call USFL Games for NBC
It’s not uncommon for former NFL quarterbacks to thrive in the broadcast booth. It is, however, not common practice to start your broadcasting career while you’re still a player.
Cardinals likely starting quarterback Colt McCoy is going to be one of NBC’s color analysts during USFL telecasts this season—with the season starting this week.
“I’ve never really called a live game but I have done a lot of behind-the-scenes work,” McCoy told azcardinals.com Wednesday. “I’ve enjoyed that process. I love the game. I have to study up on the rules—their rules are a little bit different—and I have to learn the players, the coaches, the teams. It’s a little bit different than what we do in the NFL, but I’m excited and I think it’s a great opportunity working with some great people at NBC.”
Arizona star quarterback Kyler Murray is still recovering from ACL surgery and will likely not start the 2023 season, leaving a void for McCoy to fill under center. The quarterback said his schedule is still up in the air, but was clear that he would not miss any Cardinals-related events during the offseason. He said he won’t call a game until late May or early June.
McCoy kept the door open on possibly making broadcasting his immediate future after he eventually walks away from playing in the NFL.
“I have thought a lot about it,” McCoy said. “I’m not saying this is what I’m going to do because I don’t know how good I’m going to be. It’s an art. In saying that, I’m thankful they choose me to get some practice and do this and see where it goes.”
