Cowboys’ Mike McCarthy Missing Rookie Minicamp After Back Procedure
The Cowboys kicked off their offseason rookie minicamp on Thursday without Mike McCarthy after the head coach underwent a back procedure last week, ESPN’s Todd Archer reported Saturday.
McCarthy, 59, has been away from the team since his surgery, and participated in virtual meetings over the first two days of camp, per Archer. The veteran coach’s procedure reportedly aimed to address back issues he has dealt with over the years.
It’s unknown at this time how long McCarthy’s hiatus will last, but the team is currently not expecting it be a long absence, according to ESPN.
“We know what he’s going through and that he’s going to be back soon,” third-round pick and former Texas linebacker DeMarvion Overshown told ESPN. “He’s definitely been there, welcomed us like we were a vet.”
As Dallas wraps up their three-day rookie camp, Dallas’ eight rookies and host of undrafted free agents will look to make an impression despite not playing in front of their head coach.
With his fourth season in Dallas quickly approaching, McCarthy’s next opportunity to rejoin his team will come on May 22 with the start of organized team activities.
