Cowboys VP Offers Insight Into Team’s Upcoming Salary Cap Logjam
The Cowboys have four star players who are expected to seek significant contract extensions, which potentially could lead to a salary cap dilemma.
The players include quarterback Dak Prescott, wide receiver CeeDee Lamb, cornerback Trevon Diggs and linebacker Micah Parsons, although Parsons isn’t eligible to sign an extension until after the 2023 season.
Cowboys executive vice president Stephen Jones spoke about the matter Wednesday, and he seems unbothered by the prospect of a salary cap logjam. In fact, he seemed to indicate the team has a good chance to retain all four stars for the long haul.
“I feel like as we move forward it will all be about timing, but we feel like we can work within the parameters of the cap and make those type of things happen,” Jones said, per ESPN. “We want to work on all of the above, but we’ll just have to see how this thing plays out. … But I wouldn’t say just because we don’t get it done by the start of the season doesn’t mean we’re not going to ultimately sign them.”
Prescott is signed through the 2024 season. Similarly, the Cowboys exercised the $17.99 million fifth-year option for 2024 on Lamb. Diggs can become an unrestricted free agent after the ’23 season. The Cowboys control Parsons’s contractual rights through ’25.
