Kenny Pickett Comments on Ben Roethlisberger’s Harsh Hopes for QB’s Success in First Year

Steelers quarterback Kenny Pickett was asked about his thoughts on the team’s former starting quarterback Ben Roethlisberger’s recent comments about him.

While Pickett was on the Footbahlin with Ben Roethlisberger podcast, the retired quarterback admitted that he had hoped Pickett wasn’t so successful in his rookie season that people would forget about Roethlisberger.

Pickett didn’t seem too offended by his predecessor’s comments, though.

“He’s honest,” Pickett said, via ESPN. “He’s out front about it, and he’s a fan now and he’s pulling for us and it was really cool to hear him say that. ... I think we’re just going to continue to build on that relationship. I’m excited to go into year two with another guy in my corner.”

Here’s what Roethlisberger, who played 18 years in Pittsburgh, said on his podcast:

“I wouldn’t say that I wanted Kenny to necessarily fail, but when someone comes to replace you, I still felt like I had it. I hope he doesn’t come and ball out, because then it’s like, ‘Ben who?” he said to Pickett. “As you started playing, I found myself rooting more and more for you.”

Pickett started in 12 games during his rookie season, helping lead the Steelers to a 9–8 record.
